Today is the memorial of Blessed Solanus Casey! Bernard Casey was born in Oak Grove, Wisconsin, in Pierce County, northwest of La Crosse. At age 21, he enrolled in Saint Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee (where we send many of our seminarians!), but his academic struggles led him to drop out and join the Capuchin Franciscan friars in Detroit. He chose his religious name, Solanus, after St. Francis Solano, a Franciscan missionary. Though he was not permitted to preach or hear confessions as a priest, he accepted his limitations with humility and trust, and he quickly became known for his sanctity as his community’s doorman and sacristan. He was also sought out because of his miracles of healing. After many years of humble service to the poor and sick, he died in 1957. He was beatified in 2017.
