The Diocese of Nashville is happy to announce that Erin Stracener of the Tribunal Office recently completed her license in canon law, an ecclesiastical degree, and has been appointed a judge on the collegiate panel. Erin, a parishioner of Saint Matthew Catholic Church, is only the second lay canonist in the history of our diocese.
“It is a very positive development in the jurisprudence of the Church that lay people, who are properly qualified, can serve as judges in ecclesiastical trials. That is especially meaningful in cases that have to do with marriage when you have the opportunity to have a judge who is herself married and has an experience of married and family life, which is different from the experience of the other judges who are priests. I am very excited for the perspective that Erin will bring to the jurisprudence of our court, both because of her state in life but also because of her rich and varied experience both in ministry and in life in general.” – Father John Hammond, vicar general and judicial vicar of the diocese
