• The Diocese of Portland’s first bishop, Bishop David Bacon, was remembered during a memorial Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, during which Bishop James Ruggieri blessed Bishop Bacon’s new sarcophagus. Since his passing in 1874, Bishop Bacon was interred in a crypt beneath the cathedral, but with that area no longer accessible to the public, the decision was made to transfer his remains toa sarcophagus in the main church, giving parishioners an opportunity to pray and pay their respects.
