• Pray for her courage!
On Nov. 13th, we celebrate the feast day of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini – the first US citizen to become a canonized saint!
After she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, she was sent to the US with six other sisters from Italy in 1889, helping Italian immigrants who were being discriminated against. She became an American citizen and founded 67 schools, hospitals, and orphanages in North and South America. She was definitely a hands-on ‘roll up your sleeves’ or in her case, habit, kind of sister! As the story goes, she fired the general contractors who were cheating the missionary sisters who paid to have a hotel remodeled into a hospital. For weeks she was directing and overseeing the workers on the job to keep things efficient and effective.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, missionary in the US and founder of six institutions for the poor, abandoned, uneducated and the sick, pray for us.
