Sometimes people say to me, “Father, what really discourages me about confession is that I keep committing the same old sins over and over again.” I usually respond by saying, “Are you telling me you want new sins?”
Then I go on to give this illustration: Whenever you are taking a shower, even as the water is pouring over you, you’re fairly certain that you are going to be getting dirty in almost the same kind of way and that you’ll be back for another shower in about a day.
Is that any reason for you not to take a shower? In the same way, even if we find ourselves committing the same sins over and over again, that’s no reason for us to stop going to confession.
