Bishop Luis reflects that one particular practice during the Lenten season, Stations of the Cross, can reveal a profound way that we can walk alongside Christ to remove pain, suffering, and sin from our lives.

A “good Lent” invites us to recognize where we have abandoned our crosses and where we have stepped away from the transformative suffering that leads to renewal. This spiritual work isn’t simply handed to us—it’s a challenge, one we often resist. We might prefer the superficial aspects of Lent, like giving up certain foods, while avoiding the deeper freedom Christ offers.

In accepting this challenge, we discover that Lent isn’t about temporary deprivation but about lasting spiritual freedom. When we embrace our cross as spiritual medicine, we collaborate with Jesus in our own healing. The cross becomes not just a symbol of suffering but a pathway to mercy, love, and ultimately, resurrection.
