“With you I am a Christian and for you I am a bishop.”
Pope Leo XIV, “son of Augustine,” spoke those words during his first appearance as Pope. This phrase, first used by St. Augustine, emphasizes the bishop’s (or in this case Pope’s) authority should never overshadow their Christian identity.
His motto, “In Illo uno unum” (In the One [Christ] we are one) is another reference to St. Augustine. It’s also a call to unity and communion among all members of the Church.
From just the early days of his papacy, it is clear that St. Augustine will have a heavy influence on Pope Leo XIV. The saint will be an intercessor as Pope Leo XIV strives to bring unity and peace to the Church through his love of Christ.
