• Today the Church remembers Saint Elizabeth, queen of Portugal. Born in in 1271 to royalty, Elizabeth could have pursued power and comfort. Instead, she lived the Gospel radically, using her position to feed the poor, care for the sick, and make peace where war threatened.

Perhaps she is best known for preventing conflict between her husband and son — riding between their armies as a peacemaker. But her holiness wasn’t confined to dramatic moments. Daily acts of humility, prayer, and charity shaped her into a vessel of Christ’s peace. After her husband’s death, she gave away her wealth and lived in simplicity among the Franciscan Poor Clares.

Saint Elizabeth reminds us that holiness is not about status or title but about choosing love, again and again.

Reflection: How do we use our influence — whatever it may be — for peace, justice, and for the good of others?

Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, peacemaker and servant of the poor, pray for us.
