• The second Pillar of Lent that we observe is fasting. We fast and abstain during this season to remind us of our need and longing for Christ. Each pang we feel as we fast is a reminder on how God sustains us in every age.

While fasting is a beautiful way to completely surrender to God, we also have the opportunity to fast from habits that hinder our relationship with God and one another.

With this in mind, take the time to ponder this quote attributed to Pope Francis:

“Fast from hurting words and say kind words.
Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.
Fast from anger and be filled with patience.
Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.
Fast from worries and have trust in God.
Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.
Fast from pressures and be prayerful.
Fast from bitterness and fill our hearts with joy.
Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.
Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
Fast from words and be silent so we can listen.”
