• Together on a journey of Hope, our diocesan pilgrims explored the historic Trastevere district of Rome, immersing themselves in its rich tapestry of faith and history. They visited several venerable churches where Saints Francis and Benedict lived while in Rome.

A pinnacle of their pilgrimage this day was the celebration of Mass at the ancient Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill. Constructed between 422 and 432 AD, it is noted for its cypress wood doors, carved in the 5th century, which feature one of the earliest known depictions of the Crucifixion.

Following the Holy Mass, the pilgrims were graciously welcomed into the adjoining convent complex, home to the Dominican Friars. This hallowed ground has nurtured the spiritual lives of saints such as Saint Dominic and Saint Thomas Aquinas, whose theological insights continue to guide the faithful. The pilgrims also learned from our own Kate Parkinson about the Benedictine monks at Sant’Anselmo, whose ora et labora—prayer and work—ethos exemplifies a harmonious balance of spiritual and daily life.
