• Yesterday, we participated in the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, as members of the crowd calling out: “Crucify him! Crucify him!” In the silence of Holy Saturday, we find ourselves contemplating Jesus in the tomb, dead. This may compel us to consider our own death and the truth that our earthly lives are brief, as we prepare to receive the Good News that Jesus Christ has conquered death.

This evening when the sun goes down, those who attend Holy Saturday at the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter will gather in the dark, near a fire, which becomes the source that sparks a flame that eventually is held by each person. When the Paschal Candle is placed in its stand, the Easter Proclamation (one of the most poetic hymns of praise in all liturgy) will be sung. As the night progresses, the people will trace the story of Salvation History through spoken word and song, beginning with the creation of the Heavens and the Earth and culminating with the Easter Gospel when they learn that the tomb is empty. The people who attend Easter Vigil will witness the baptisms of those entering the Church. Together, they will move from darkness into light and from death into life.
