What is tithing? It is the practice of giving 10 percent of our annual income back to God, from whom all gifts flow. A good ratio to follow is to give 5 percent to your parish, 1 to 2 percent to the diocesan annual appeal, and 3 to 4 percent to second collections and other charities. Even if our life circumstances make it difficult to give the full tithe, the Catholic Church calls all disciples to steward (safeguard and generously share) the gifts that God has given us, including all of God’s creation, our personal vocations, and the Church.
Parents steward the Church by nurturing their children in the light of faith; parishioners steward the Church by participating in parish ministries and liturgy and serving the larger community; we also steward the Church by generously giving our time, money, and prayer to parish and diocesan ministries. While a life of stewardship may be challenging and difficult at times, it also is a great source of joy.
