• Today Archbishop Joe S. Vásquez celebrated a Mass on the occasion of the election of Pope Leo XIV at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston, with Auxiliary Bishop Italo Dell’Oro, CRS, concelebrating.

During his homily, Archbishop Vásquez said he welcomed the newly elected pontiff, calling him “an excellent man to lead us,” and thanked the Cardinal DiNardo and the other Cardinal Electors of the conclave for their discernment, under the direction of the Holy Spirit.

He reflected on the first messages of the Holy Father, which included a call for peace throughout the world: “A disarmed peace and a disarming peace.”

“Jesus, our risen Lord, comes to his disciples and to us with a disarmed peace. When Jesus Christ reveals himself to his disciples, he opens his hands and shows his feet and side, which have been pierced by nails and the lance,” he said. “Pope Leo may want us to recognize Christ as the one with the open heart, ready to receive us, with love.”

“All of us seek that peace, which only Christ can give,” Archbishop Vásquez continued.

He also reflected on Christ the Good Shepherd.

“For [Jesus], we are never a number or a member of a group or a unknown person, He personally knows us. He is concerned about our lives. He knows our worries and problems, but he’s also aware of our joys and our blessings,” he said. “We come today to this Eucharist, because He has called us by name and we have heard His voice and we have responded. He leads us to this altar to come and partake of the cup of everlasting salvation and from the bread of life. ‘I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.'”
