Today is the optional memorial for Saint Isidore the Farmer, who spent his entire life working on the estate of John de Vergas, a wealthy landowner from Madrid. He married a young woman who also became a saint—Maria de la Cabeza. Their only child, a son, died young.
A deeply religious man, Isidore rose early in the morning to attend church before beginning his work day, and every day, as he walked behind the plow, he communed with God. He spent his holidays devoutly visiting the church of Madrid and the surrounding areas. Known for his love for the poor, Isidore, it is believed, miraculously supplied the hungry with food. He also had great concern for the proper treatment of animals.
Isidore the Farmer died May 15, 1130, and was declared a saint in 1622, with Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, and Philip Neri. Together, the group is known in Spain as “the five saints.” Saint Isidore the Farmer is the Patron Saint of farmers and rural laborers. Saint Isidore, pray for us!
