• Bishop Kagan celebrated the annual Blue Mass on May 15 at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck. The Blue Mass is an opportunity to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the protection of public safety. The Mass honors all active, retired and deceased law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who have served in these invaluable professions. The name comes from the traditional uniform color associated with law enforcement. Father Thomas Dade of the Archdiocese of Baltimore formed the Catholic Police and Firemen’s Society to begin this tradition while serving at St. Patrick’s Church in Washington, D.C. in the 1930s.
