Today, we honor Saint Paul VI, a courageous shepherd of the Church and a visionary leader during a time of great transformation. Born Giovanni Battista Montini in 1897, he was ordained a priest on this day in 1920 — a date now celebrated as his feast day.
As pope from 1963 to 1978, Saint Paul VI guided the Church through the Second Vatican Council and its aftermath, fostering renewal while upholding tradition. He was a tireless advocate for peace, dialogue, and human dignity, famously addressing the United Nations in 1965 with the plea: “No more war, war never again!”
His landmark encyclical Humanae Vitae reaffirmed the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life and love. He also established the Synod of Bishops, deepening the spirit of collegiality in the Church.
Canonized in 2018, Saint Paul VI reminds us that holiness and leadership in turbulent times go hand in hand. May we, like him, hold fast to the truth, walk humbly, and trust the Holy Spirit to guide the Church through every age. Saint Paul VI, pray for us!
