Today we celebrate the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While the story emphasizes Mary’s hasty journey to Judah to visit her cousin Elizabeth, Jesus and John the Baptist take the spotlight when, upon hearing Mary’s greeting to Elizabeth, the infant John leaps in his mother’s womb. Then, Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, shouts: “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me” (Luke 1:42-43). Thus, the Messiah, who is not yet born, but is present in his mother Mary’s womb, meets his precursor, the Baptizer, who also is present in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
