Born into a wealthy noble family in twelfth-century Assisi, Saint Clare seemed destined for a life of privilege. But inspired by the radical Gospel witness of Saint Francis of Assisi, Clare left everything behind — silently slipping out of her home one night to dedicate her life entirely to Christ.
With Francis as her spiritual guide and friend, Clare embraced a life of poverty, prayer, and sisterhood, founding the Poor Ladies of San Damiano (later known as the Poor Clares). She became the first woman in Church history to write a rule of life for a religious community.
Even though she remained cloistered for most of her life, Clare’s courage, wisdom, and fierce devotion to Christ made her a light to many. In 1240, when her convent was under attack from Saracen soldiers, Clare, though she was weak and sick, called upon the Lord for protection. She then proceeded to bring the Blessed Sacrament out before the soldiers. The Saracens were struck with fear from seeing the courage of Saint Clare and her sisters standing before them without fear. They retreated and left Assisi.
Saint Clare, pray for the People of God in the Diocese of Cheyenne. May we have the courage to boldly proclaim Christ’s presence in the Holy Eucharist, and bring him to all whom we encounter. Amen.
