Today is the Memorial of St. Jane Frances de Chantal! St. Jane was married for nine years and had four children when she lost her husband in a hunting accident. After her husband’s death, Jane devoted herself to prayer and to the care of her family. She later met Francis de Sales, then the Bishop of Geneva, Switzerland. The two quickly became friends and de Sales soon became Jane’s spiritual director. They then founded the Sisters of the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610, which started out as an active order but then became cloistered. At Jane’s death at the age of 69, the Visitation Nuns had grown to 86 convents.
