Bishop’s Sunday Gospel Reflection:
“In today’s Gospel, someone asks Jesus a question that has surely troubled each of our own hearts: “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Christ does not respond with a straightforward “yes” or “no.” He calls us to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” and makes it clear that entering the Kingdom of God is neither automatic nor easy. Yet, He concludes by mentioning that people from north, south, east, and west will recline at table in the Heavenly Kingdom. In this one response, He gives us both a warning of narrow exclusivity and a promise of worldwide welcome.
How many people to be saved does not seem to be the question Our Lord is interested in. Rather, He invites us to rethink our own journey to Heaven.
Jesus wants us to understand that getting to Heaven is not something we should presume. With the sobering image that the Master of the House may someday turn us away as strangers, Jesus exhorts us to strive for the strength to enter through this narrow gate. No, this does not mean that our own efforts will get us to Heaven. Rather, that we need to cooperate with God’s grace and actively seek to grow in virtue.”
