An intense love for God: St. Jerome (345 – 420) is the patron saint of librarians, scholars and translators. Unlike most saints who are known for their virtue, St. Jerome was unfortunately known for his temper. He was above all a Scripture scholar, translating most of the Old Testament from Hebrew. As a young man, he had intense preparatory studies and also traveled extensively in Palestine, marking each spot of Christ’s life with an outpouring of devotion. St. Jerome died in Bethlehem, and the remains of his body now lie buried in Rome.
As we keep him in mind today, there’s another Jerome that we know of in the present who is also well-educated and has a love of books and libraries—our very own Archbishop Emeritus Jerome Listecki.
Saint Jerome, pray for us!
