On July 22, 1961, Saint Pope John XXIII established the Diocese of Baton Rouge, comprising twelve civil parishes in south central Louisiana. He designated St. Joseph Church in Baton Rouge—built in 1853–1855—as the Cathedral of the new diocese.
Today, as we celebrate Saint Pope John XXIII’s feast day, we give thanks for his faith, wisdom, and the foundation he set for our diocesan family.
