Bishop’s Sunday Gospel Reflection:
Today’s Gospel tells us outright what Jesus’ parable is about: the necessity of praying always without becoming weary. Our Lord describes how even a dishonest, selfish judge is moved to establish justice by a widow’s persistence. All the more, then, will God provide justice, goodness, and a fair answer to those who “call out to Him day and night.”
We can be tempted to think that apparent silence from God is a sign of refusal or displeasure. This Gospel tells the opposite. Our prayers are not in vain, and God desires our persistent requests.
But how hard it is not to grow weary! This Gospel promises that God will see to justice speedily, and yet so often we feel like days, months, even years of begging have amounted to nothing.
Our Lord calls us to have faith in God’s timing. The divine timing is always perfect—there will be no delay. That said, it will also not be early. The promise of a prompt answer is not the promise of a premature answer.
Jesus calls us to endure in our prayer, persevere in our Faith, and remain steadfast in trust that the promises of God will be fulfilled in their proper time. He asks, “…when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” Let us pray without ceasing, asking God that the faith of His Church might remain rich and strong until He comes again.
