The pope’s speech drew welcome and applause from bishops across the world, including Detroit’s Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger, who commended Pope Leo’s message as urgently needed.
“I eagerly welcome Pope Leo XIV’s call to confront the plight of migrants and other ‘new’ ways of excluding the vulnerable as urgent moral issues of our time,” Archbishop Weisenburger said Oct. 23. “His message reminds us that care for the suffering and marginalized is not an optional act of charity, but an essential expression of the Gospel.”
