Scenes from the Red Mass celebrated by Bishop Kagan on Oct. 20 at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. This votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, known as the Red Mass, invokes the guidance and blessings of the Holy Spirit upon judges, government officials and all the members of the legal community of this great state in fulfilling their duties for the common good. The word “red” was originally used to describe the Mass in the early 1300s, because the justices of the English Supreme Court wore scarlet-colored robes.
