#NewSaintNovember continues with our 3rd (of 9) newly canonized saints: St. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, the beloved “Doctor of the Poor.”
St. José Gregorio (1864–1919) was a Venezuelan physician who grew up in a quiet mountain town high in the Andes. Gifted from an early age, he earned his medical doctorate in Caracas, the capital, and was later sent by the Venezuelan government to study modern medicine in Paris and Berlin.
When he returned home, St. José Gregorio continued his pioneering medical work. And yet, a deeper priority soon took hold of his heart. He began caring for the poor, often treating them for free and paying for their medicine himself. Known throughout Venezuela as “el Doctor de los Pobres,” he remains a popular and beloved figure in the nation. Canonized alongside St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez this past October, together they are Venezuela’s first saints.
St. José Gregorio, pray for us.
