Today the Church in the United States honors St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian religious sister who gave her life to serving Italian immigrants in the United States by building hospitals, schools, and orphanages to support them.
Did you know that Mother Cabrini was slated to be a passenger on what would be the Titanic’s first and last voyage in April 1912? She was supposed to visit the United States after a visit to her sisters in England, and the English sisters booked her a ticket aboard the Titanic for her return to the U.S. Thankfully, an emergency at one of her hospitals in New York prompted her to seek passage to the U.S. from Italy rather than England, and she was able to continue her work for a few more years before her death in 1917. Talk about divine providence!
You can read this incredible story, and other close calls that Mother Cabrini experienced in her missionary work, in the article linked in this post.
