• The latest “Sunday Word” column in the Florida Catholic by Father Alfredo Hernández of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary explores the fear that many people have:

      Are you afraid?

“Are you afraid?” I have many times asked this question of people who are seriously ill. Almost always they respond that they are not. That little word coming out of their mouths — “No” — is not only a beautiful profession of faith of the dying, but it is wonderful consolation for their loved ones. The readings of these last Sundays of the liturgical year focus on the end of time. In the Gospel for this 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Luke 21:5-19), Jesus announces moments of grave difficulty before the end of the world: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky” (vv. 10-11).
