Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King also referred to as Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 to respond to growing secularism and atheism and to provide hope for Catholics abroad that “while governments around them crumbled—the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever.” This solemnity reminds us that while governments come and go, Christ reigns as King forever (USCCB).
The feast also points to the theological realities of Jesus’ Incarnation: being fully human and fully divine.
May all in heaven and on earth never cease to proclaim Christ’s glory.
