• Today, the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe!

Though most people today do not live under the reign of a worldly king, today’s feast reminds us that we do indeed have a king in Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, a king was not part of God’s original plan for Israel, but they insisted they have one, because they wanted to be like the other nations surrounding them. God first sent them Saul, and then David, whose kingship God promised to extend for all time through his descendants. The Davidic line of kings was lost during Israel’s exile, but the prophets during that time of exile foretold that another king, in the line of David, would rise up and reign forever. Jesus was the fulfillment of this kingship, and His reign was not one of military might, but of self-emptying love and the deliverance of Israel from their sins so as to bring them into communion with God. And His reign and His mission continues today in His Church.

We pray today that Jesus Christ may truly reign in all hearts, and that all people will respond to the call to advance His Kingdom through works of charity and evangelization.

We also pray today for our Christ the King Parish (Christ the King Pastorate, South Central WI)!
