#NewSaintNovember continues with our 8th (of 9) newly canonized saints: St. Maria Troncatti, FMA (1883–1969).
“Madrecita” (“Little Mother”) was born in Italy but spent almost 50 years doing mission work – mostly in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle! She was a nurse, a midwife, a “surgeon” in emergencies, a catechist, and a peacemaker between warring groups — she quite literally did it all.
Described by many as a missionary of reconciliation, she lived the beatitude: “Blessed are the peacemakers.” That’s far more difficult than it sounds — especially when jungle communities are on the brink of violent conflict! But Madrecita was not afraid, and she always seemed illuminated by the love of Christ.
She tragically died in a plane crash in Ecuador in 1969, but her witness lives on, and she was canonized by Pope Leo XIV this past October.
St. Maria Troncatti, pray for us, and teach us to cultivate peace in our lives.
