After becoming ill during his childhood, Nicholas Black Elk had a vision where he was called to serve as a spiritual leader and later had another vision of the Son of God.
Black Elk was able to live out his Catholic faith and Lakota heritage. After embracing Catholicism later in life, he became a catechist and brought nearly 400 Native Americans to the Church.
While Black Elk is not yet a saint, he is recognized as a Servant of God in the Church. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth
