Happy St. Nicholas Day! On December 6, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Nicholas of Myra, who has become identified with the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Nicholas was born in southern Turkey in the third century and was orphaned at a young age. He used his inheritance to serve those in need and was well-known for his generosity throughout his life. In one popular story, Nicholas, while serving as Bishop of Myra, saved three young girls from a life of prostitution by secretly tossing a bag of coins through a window so they would have dowries and could be married. The coins are said to have landed in their shoes, leading to a tradition in some countries in which shoes are left out on this day and coins or small gifts placed in them.
