• Today was a glorious day at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston! Surrounded by Vocations Director Fr. John Soplinski, clergy, deacons, seminarians, religious, and faithful from across the state of WV, Seminarian Clifton Mastran was ordained a transitional Deacon. Bishop Mark Brennan celebrated mass, with Monsignor, William Fay, of Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Massachusetts; and Fr. Dennis Schuelkens, Jr., of St. Joseph the Worker in Weirton, as the vesting clergy for our newest deacon – Deacon Clifton Mastran.
Deacon Bryce Timberlake of St. James the greater in Charles Town shared the Gospel, with Bishop Mark as homilist.
Speaking directly to Mastran, he said, “the heart of the diaconate is service. “
Whether proclaiming the gospel, hearing someone’s troubles, handing out food at a local pantry, or clothing to those in need – serve and conform more fully to the Lord.
“The diaconate is not for oneself but for others….
“Clifton you believe God is calling you to be the servant. The Church agrees!”
Bishop Mark wove the readings together – Jeremiah 1:4-9, stressing “the call – have no fear. I am here to deliver you”; Hebrews – 5:1-10, “the advice… How you serve makes a difference – people are more likely to see Christ in you”; and the Gospel, Matthew 5:14-16 , “be salt and light… “ Preserve God’s word and the church. Reveal the truth. That is what God commissioned the Church to do teach the world.
“Your actions will encourage the people….
“I am grateful to God and to you. May the Lord bless, guide, and protect you.
“Learn each day a little more of the Lord’s charity whose minister you are becoming.”
Deacon Clifton will serve the first months of his diaconate at St. Joseph the Worker and Sacred Heart of Mary Parishes in Weirton.
