In the Old Testament, homecoming — returning to our roots — is one of the key themes of the #JubileeYear. Enter today’s readings: the return of the Prodigal Son.
When we’ve strayed from our Father’s house, our impulse might be to pray, alongside the Prodigal Son, to be treated only “as you would treat one of your hired workers.”
But what if God would welcome you in an instant, not merely as his worker or his servant… but as a friend? As a son or daughter?
If we truly are God’s beloved sons and daughters, we must ask big things of our Father who loves us, especially when we’ve fallen short. We must ask, boldly and humbly, for our Lord to remind us who we are in him.
On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, let Jesus say to you: “Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet… this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again” (Luke 15:22, 24).
