• Lent is an opportunity to live, think, and pray differently. This Lenten season, if you don’t already do so, consider incorporating scripture into your prayer life. Thoughtfully reading the Word is a beautiful way to deepen our relationship with the Lord. One way to pray with scripture is to choose a Gospel passage in which Jesus Christ is interacting with others; remind yourself that you are reading this passage to encounter Jesus in a personal way.

Read the passage slowly and deliberately, so that it enters deeply into your heart; then, read it again, so that details of the story become clear to you. With your eyes closed, reconstruct the scene in your mind; are you an observer or a participant? Who else is with you? What does Jesus look like? How does his voice sound? How do you feel in his presence? What emotions are other people displaying? What else do you see, hear, taste, smell, feel? Rest in the story for a while. When you are ready, have a conversation with Christ about what is in your heart. This kind of prayer with scripture is known as contemplation.
