On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, those who are preparing for baptism will experience the Second Scrutiny, and the Gospel is from John 9: 1-41. We hear of Jesus restoring sight to a man blind from birth, and Christ reveals Himself as the Light of the World. The man’s physical healing mirrors the deeper spiritual awakening that comes through faith. Though questioned and doubted, the man boldly proclaims, “I was blind, and now I see,” (John 9:25).
The paradox is that some of the Pharisees, who recognize that the man has been miraculously healed, are unable to see that Jesus is the one whom they have been anticipating, and they remain blind.
The blind man’s journey reflects our own call to move from darkness into Christ’s light. As we walk with the elect preparing for baptism, may we examine our own hearts — where are we still blind? Let us surrender to Jesus, that He may open our eyes to the truth and lead us ever closer to Him.
