• St. Benedict the Moor (1526–1589) was the son of African slaves who were taken from Africa to San Fratello, Sicily, where they were converted to Christianity. He was teased and bullied for his black skin, but he found comfort in God’s love. At age 18, he was granted freedom, and at age 21, he sold his few possessions, gave the money to the poor, and joined a monastic group at San Fratello.

Benedict became a Franciscan friar known for his charity, love of cooking, and ability to guide souls, which earned him a reputation for holiness throughout Sicily. He also had a deep devotion to prayer, and some even said his face was divinely illuminated as he prayed.

He died at his convent and was canonized in 1807. Benedict the Moor is the patron saint of African Americans.
