Today is the Optional Memorial of Saint Vincent Ferrer, Priest.
Born in Valencia, Spain, Vincent Ferrer completed studies in philosophy and joined the Dominican friars around age 18. Ordained a priest ten years later, Father Vincent lived during what is commonly referred to as the Western Schism, when two men claimed to be pope in 1378. Urban VI resided in Rome, and Clement VII resided in Avignon, France. At the time of the division, good and holy people disagreed on who the real pope should be, and the future Saint Vincent Ferrer supported Clement VII. The matter was resolved by a Church council in 1417. Although Father Vincent’s choice was named the antipope, he humbly embraced this resolution and convinced many people to join him. In this way, Father Vincent played an important role in helping to end the schism.
After recovering from a serious illness, Father Vincent spent the last 20 years of his life spreading the Good News in Spain, France, Switzerland, the Low Countries, and Lombardy, stressing the need of repentance. He became known as the “Angel of the Judgment.” Saint Vincent Ferrer is the patron saint of builders, businessmen, and reconciliation. Saint Vincent, pray for us!
