• On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, those who are preparing for baptism will experience the Third Scrutiny.

The Gospel is from John 11:1-45, in which Jesus reveals his power over death through the raising of Lazarus. Martha and Mary express deep sorrow, yet also trust in Jesus, even in their grief. When Jesus declares, “I am the resurrection and the life,” he invites them – and us – to believe that life in him transcends even the grave. This passage reminds us that while suffering and loss are real, they do not have the final word. Jesus weeps with us in our pain, while also giving us hope. Just as he commanded Lazarus to rise, he calls us out of spiritual darkness into new life. As we approach Easter, may we trust in Christ’s promise of resurrection. No matter how lifeless or broken our lives and the world may seem, Jesus Christ’s love restores and renews. Let us walk forward in faith, knowing that in Jesus, death is never the end — it is the beginning of eternal life.

Reflection: How have you experienced “little” deaths in your life, like the loss of a job, a broken heart or dream, or a cross you did not choose? How have you experienced resurrection after those deaths?
