• Today we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, beginning with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and the joyous reception he receives. As he rides along, the people place their cloaks on the road, and, as he approaches the slope of the Mount of Olives, Jesus’ disciples begin to praise God and proclaim, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest” (Luke 19:38).

Thus, we enter Holy Week – the week that changed the world forever – but before we celebrate Christ’s triumph over death and his invitation to share in the glory of his resurrection, we are reminded of the hours that led to his crucifixion.

Long before Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, palms were symbols of life among the nomadic tribes. When crossing the desert, they rejoiced when they saw a palm tree because they knew they were entering an oasis with life-giving water. On the Third Sunday of Lent, those preparing for baptism, heard of the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman when he asked her for a drink of water, and she was unnerved by his request. His response to her was: “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (John 4:10). How fitting that the people greeted Jesus Christ, the one who offers us living water, which will forever quench our thirst, with palms.

Reflection: Are you ready to surrender your life to Christ this week and accept the living water, which will become “a spring of water welling up to eternal life?” (John 4:14).
