• Yesterday, Bishop Kagan celebrated the annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. The Chrism Mass reminds us of our oneness in Christ through baptism and its holy anointing, made possible by the ministry of the bishop and his priests. The Church makes use of three sacred oils for sacraments: oil of the sick, oil of catechumens and chrism oil. The first two are blessed by the bishop and he consecrates the third during the annual Chrism Mass held during Holy Week. Each year, the bishop blesses the new oils for all our 93 parishes. After Mass, the oils are bottled into smaller vessels and distributed to priests to be used in administering the sacraments that call for oil during that year—baptism, confirmation, anointing of the sick and holy orders. This Mass is also known for the renewal of priestly promises made on the day of ordination. Photos by Deacon Joe Krupinsky.
