• The California Catholic Conference is asking people to take action on Assembly Bill 379:

On Tuesday, the Assembly Public Safety Committee once again stripped protections for 16 and 17 year old victims from #AB379. Right now, buying an older teen for sex is a misdemeanor, punishable by as little as 2 days in jail and these amendments will continue that practice. The original bill would have made this violation a felony, as justice demands. Then, in an extraordinary move yesterday, the Assembly removed Assemblymember Maggy Krell name from her own bill, and added meaningless “intent” language to protect 16- and 17-year-olds.
Children cannot consent to their own exploitation, and adults have a responsibility to protect children. Please send a message to your Assemblymember that you both support protecting the vulnerable women in prostitution under the bill currently, and that you want the bill to be amended back to support AB 379 under Assemblymember Krell’s original language. We are grateful for Asm. Krell’s advocacy and believe young people deserve to be protected.
