• A Message from Archbishop Henning on St. Florian:

On May 4th, the Catholic Church across the world honors Saint Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters. Florian’s cross, with its four rounded edges, may be seen on the badge of the International Association of Firefighters and on my own father’s FDNY Lieutenant’s badge. Saint Florian was an officer of the Roman Army serving in a part of the ancient Roman Empire that is now part of Austria. He trained and supervised a firefighting brigade from among the soldiers stationed in the city until he was martyred for his Christian faith during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian in about 304 A.D. The Catholics of the Archdiocese of Boston express our profound gratitude for the service of the firefighters in Boston and in the many other communities of the region.
The sacrifices that they make and the risks they take to protect life and property are a great gift to all of us who call this region home. To all the firefighters: As you work hard to train, run towards danger, and lead grateful survivors to safety, we invoke the intercession of St. Florian for you and the members of your department. We pray that you may be protected from danger, that the Lord will give you strength to rescue those in peril, and that our loving God will bless your families.
      Saint Florian, pray for us!
