• Bishop Steven’s statement regarding Pope Leo XIV

With thanksgiving and joy, I rejoice at the news that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., has been chosen as Pope Leo XIV. As a religious priest for the Order of Saint Augustine, he served as a missionary in Peru, and he holds both U.S. and Peruvian citizenship. Since he is a native of Chicago, IL, Catholics in the United States of America feel a special closeness to him. Yet, it is essential to embrace him not merely as an “American” Pope. He is the Bishop of Rome and the Pope for the Roman Catholic Church.

In his inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV said that he has been chosen to be the Successor of Saint Peter and to walk together with us, “as a united Church, always seeking peace and justice, always seeking to work as men and women faithful to Jesus Christ, without fear, to proclaim the Gospel, to be missionaries … a Church that always seeks charity, that always seeks to be close especially to those who suffer.”

The election of a Pope is a discernment with faith in the Holy Spirit. We trust that the Risen Lord continues to guide the Church in every age. I invite Catholics and all people of good will to pray for Pope Leo XIV that he may be a humble servant and faithful witness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
