⚜️ The fleur-de-lis, French for “flower of the lily,” is often used in Catholic symbology to represent the Virgin Mary. A symbol of virtue, purity, and light in both the secular world as well as religious. The fleur-de-lis, with the three petals of the same flower, is also used to represent the Trinity. Some interpret the bracket at the bottom to be Mary, because without her no one would understand the Trinity, as she gave birth to Jesus.
This also pays homage to Pope Leo XIV’s French heritage, which he has on his dad’s side. French kings adopted the fleur-de-lis in the 12th century, and it is often associated with King Clovis I and his conversion to Christianity.
❤️🔥 The flaming heart, a human heart, represents St. Augustine’s love for his fellow brothers and sisters. The book represents the #SacredScriptures and St. Augustine’s conversion to Christianity. St. Augustine said: “Vulnerasti cor meum verbo tuo”: “You have pierced my heart with your Word.”
📜 Pope Leo XIV’s episcopal motto is taken from St. Augustine’s “Exposition on Psalm 127,” where he explains that “although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one.” Pope Leo XIV also states that “unity and communion are truly part of the charism of the Order of St. Augustine, and also of my way of acting and thinking.”
