One of the 72 disciples that Jesus Christ sent out to preach the good news, Matthias’ journey with Jesus began with the Baptism of the Lord, and Matthias was a witness to Christ’s Resurrection.
After the Ascension, Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers – 120 of them, according to scripture – to announce that they needed another man to take the place of Judas, who had betrayed Jesus. They nominated two men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. After praying, they drew lots, and Matthias was chosen, becoming a member of the body of divinely mandated witnesses to the life, teaching, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Matthias is not mentioned anywhere in Scripture, other than in Acts 1:23 and 26. According to various traditions, Matthias preached in Cappadocia, Jerusalem, the shores of the Caspian Sea (in modern-day Turkey), and Ethiopia. Some believe that he died by crucifixion in Colchis or by stoning in Jerusalem.
Matthias is invoked for assistance against alcoholism and for support by recovering alcoholics. Saint Matthias, pray for us!
