The First Week of Pope Leo XIV: Early Acts of a New Pontiff
After being elected by the #CollegeofCardinals on May 8th, Pope Leo XIV has had a busy time settling into the papacy.
Friday, May 9th
✝️ Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass for the #CollegeofCardinals who elected him in the Sistine Chapel.
Saturday, May 10th
🎙️Pope Leo XIV gave a formal address to the #CollegeofCardinals in the New Synod Hall fo the Vatican. He invited Cardinals to renew their commitment to the church’s post-Vatican II journey, detailed in #PopeFrancis’ Evangelii Gaudium, specifically the “missionary conversion of the entire Christian community.”
🙏 Pope Leo XIV paid a visit to the tomb of #PopeFrancis in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, stopping to pray before both Mary and Pope Francis.
🤲 Pope Leo XIV lead prayers at the shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Genazzano, Italy. The shrine is run by the Augustinian confreres, of whom Pope Leo XIV is a member. He is the first pope to ever be a member of the Augustinian Order. While there he greeted crowds of people who had come to see him.
Sunday, May 11th
✝️ Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass in the Vatican Grotto. Father Alejandro Moral Anton, Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine, concelebrated. Pope Leo XIV elaborated on a topic touched upon during his Urbi et Orbi Blessing: “Listening is what allows us to enter into true dialogue.” He went on to call listening the foundation for building bridges.
🎶 Pope Leo XIV led the Regina Coeli prayer in Latin from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. He also spoke before and after the prayer, touching upon vocations: “It is important that young men and women on their vocational journey find acceptance, listening and encouragement in their communities…”
Monday, May 12th
🗞️ Pope Leo XIV held an audience with the press in the Paul VI Audience Hall of the Vatican. The representatives present were the ones who had covered his election on May 8th.
Tuesday, May 13th
📸 Pope Leo XIV joined Instagram! He is not the first to do so, #PopeFrancis also was on Instagram under the handle @franciscus. Pope Leo chose the handle @pontifex, a nod towards one of his titles.
✝️ Pope Leo XIV visited, celebrated Mass, and had lunch with the Augustinians.
Wednesday, May 14th
🎾 Pope Leo XIV met with and received a tennis racket from Jannik Sinner, the no. 1 tennis player in the world.
🇮🇶 Pope Leo XIV met with Eastern Catholic Church in the Paul VI Audience Hall at the Vatican, telling them: “You are precious in God’s eyes,” and expressing how happy he was to devote his one of his first encounters of his pontificate to the Eastern faithful.
Thursday, May 15th
