• We live in a time that is deeply divided along partisan lines. Many will – and already have – rushed to determine whether the new Pope is “liberal” and “progressive”, or “conservative” and “traditional”. Many people – even Catholics – will try to fit him into their own worldview, and reject or embrace him simply because he may affirm or reject their own preconceived notions.

      But our Holy Father is not a president, or a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ, the 267th Pope, and the successor of St. Peter. He cannot be dismissed or fit neatly into one dichotomy or another, because he stands for the richness and fullness of Catholic teaching, which first and foremost calls us to encounter Christ in the Church and in one another.

      And because of this, the office of the Pope is very heavy. He is our father, and carries the weight of the souls of over 1 billion Catholics on his shoulders. So please, join us in praying for Pope Leo XIV, for his intentions, and that he will be a good and courageous shepherd. We owe him that, before we say or type a single opinion about him.

      Please join us in praying, today and in days to come:

      “O God, shepherd and ruler of all the faithful,
      look favorably on your servant Leo XIV,
      whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd;
      grant, we pray, that by word and example
      He may be of service to those over whom he presides
      so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care,
      he may come to everlasting life.

      “Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
      who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
      God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
