This morning, Father Thomas Piro celebrated his First Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Ann Church, of Notre Dame de la Mer Parish in Wildwood. He was surrounded by fellow priests, diocesan seminarians, family, friends, and a supportive parish community.
The homilist for the Mass was Father Michael Romano, former diocesan Director of Vocations and the soon-to-be Rector of Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. In his reflection, he encouraged Father Piro to serve with compassion and zeal as he begins his priestly ministry at Saint Bridget University Parish in Glassboro, with a special mission to the students of Rowan University.
During the Mass, Father Piro expressed deep gratitude to all who supported his vocation, especially his parents. In a moving moment steeped in tradition, he gifted the maniturgium (the cloth used to wipe his hands after anointing) to his mother, and the stole from his first confession to his father. He also gave a heartfelt shoutout to Bishop Dennis Sullivan, “the Bishop from the Bronx,” who helped form him into “the priest from Erma.”
